Birthday Gift<\/strong><\/h3>\n
It all started with looking for a birthday gift for my mom. I wasn\u2019t looking for an object, but an experience. There are plenty of those on the website zahoramizadolami.sk in the \u201cBook an Experience\u201d section. Since we\u2019re from Horehronie, my eye was immediately drawn to one titled: \u201cThe Unknown Coburg Railway Route<\/em>.\u201d It\u2019s a full-day experiential tour of places in Horehronie and Gemer where the Coburgs\u2014an important princely and royal family that positively influenced local industry and trade\u2014left their mark. I was all the more delighted when I discovered that many of these places are connected to my mother\u2019s childhood. All that was left to do was buy the tickets and look forward to the big day.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”24″][vc_single_image image=”49432″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”24″][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n
Monuments to the House of Coburg in the Horehronie Region<\/strong><\/h3>\n
After boarding the minibus in Brezno, we set off for our first destination: the Coburg Manor in Pohorelsk\u00e1 Ma\u0161a<\/strong>. It originally served as the estate management house and was the center of the Coburg ironworks complex. We toured the individual rooms and were pleased to hear that the building is set to be restored. The<\/strong> adjacent Historic Coburg Park<\/strong>, which is the only one of its kind in the Horehronie region, is also set to undergo restoration. Plans include planting various tree species and building a bridge. After a short walk, we found ourselves by the railroad tracks, where the Coburg family\u2019s passenger stop once stood. We walked all the way to the Ferdinand Coburg Memorial<\/strong> on the main road, where a minibus picked us up.      <\/p>\n
Our next stop was nearby Nov\u00e1 Ma\u0161a<\/strong>, with the ruins of Ferdinand\u2019s ironworks<\/strong>. Using a diagram, we were shown how the entire complex operated. In the center stood a blast furnace for iron. In the adjacent building was a dormitory where the ironworkers used to live. It was covered with plastic sheeting because a fire had destroyed it that year. My mom, however, was interested in the building that used to be a coal and wood warehouse. She used to come here on vacation to visit her grandmother. Today, it consists of several residential units, many of which have been modernized. We also took a look at the former caretaker\u2019s house and then moved on to the rolling mill<\/strong>.        <\/p>\n
We got off in front of the Evangelical church<\/strong> \u2014the only one in the Upper Horehronie region. Its construction was financed by the Coburg family, who cared deeply about the spiritual well-being of their employees. From the pews, we could admire the altar, the pulpit, and the magnificent chandelier.  <\/p>\n
The last place we visited in the Horehronie region was Zlatno<\/strong>. Ferdinand of Coburg liked it so much here that he wished for ten of his bones to rest right here\u2014in the heart of Slovakia\u2019s beautiful countryside. Our path led us to Horn\u00fd h\u00e1mor<\/strong>, also known as \u201cthe pink one\u201d because of the color of its facade. In the past, semi-finished products from Ferdinand\u2019s ironworks were processed here.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”24″][vc_single_image image=”49441″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”24″ image_repeat=”no-repeat” background_image=”49441″][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n
Monuments to the House of Coburg in Gemer<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Now we had a longer drive ahead of us through Mur\u00e1\u0148 and Rev\u00faca all the way to Jel\u0161ava. Along the way, we passed the turnoff for Predn\u00e1 Hora, home to the Koh\u00e1ry-Coburg Manor<\/strong>\u2014which today serves as a treatment center for addiction\u2014and the Hunting Lodge<\/strong>, featuring an exhibition on Ferdinand Coburg. <\/p>\n
A delicious lunch was already waiting for us at the restaurant in Jel\u0161ava, which was included in the price of the tour. Refreshed, we made our way to the<\/strong> local Coburg Castle<\/strong>. It is a three-story building in the French Classicist style from the 18th century, which is gradually being restored thanks to numerous grants. We walked through the rooms\u2014some lacked floors, while others featured interactive exhibits, an art exhibition, period furniture, or a model of the Coburg family with which we could take photos. We were most intrigued by the glass-enclosed rooms designed for overnight stays right inside the castle, which we\u2019ll definitely try out in the future.<\/p>\n

An experience we still remember to this day<\/strong><\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n
After returning to Brezno, we rated the day as excellent. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who wants to get a glimpse into the past in a way other than by reading books. Friendly tour guides, interesting sites, a superbly organized itinerary, informative insights, a good lunch, and comfortable transportation\u2014all of this made the day unforgettable, and we still look back on it fondly, even though we took part in it back in 2023.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”24px”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”49468,49465,49462,49459,49456,49453,49450,49447,49444,49441,49435,49432,49429″ img_size=”400×400″ css=”” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space height=”56px”][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n
There’s no need to despair<\/h3>\n
The experience is organized every year during the summer months, and you\u2019re sure to discover something new. For example, in the Horehronie region, three unique information panels for tourists have been added in Va\u013ekov\u0148a, Zlatno, and Nov\u00e1 Ma\u0161a. The program also includes the aforementioned Hunting Lodge in Predn\u00e1 Hora. You\u2019ll also get to see the ongoing revitalization of the historic Coburg Park in Pohorelsk\u00e1 Ma\u0161a and the reconstruction of the Coburg Castle in Jel\u0161ava.   <\/p>\n
