The Slovak National Uprising (SNP) began on 29 August 1944 shortly after 8:00 p.m. in Banská Bystrica, right in the center of the Banská Bystrica Region, when Ján Golian sent out the signal “Start with the evacuation”.
From that moment on, many places in the Banská Bystrica Region became witnesses to heroic deeds as well as tragic events of a significant milestone of the Second World War period (1939 – 1945). Right in the center of the uprising and the symbol of resistance – in Banská Bystrica – you will gain a complete overview of events from the preparations for the uprising to its suppression in the iconic SNP Museum. Set out for the burned villages that experienced the horrors of rampage and into which life nevertheless returned.
When planning your wanderings through the Banská Bystrica Region on foot or by bicycle, visit memorials and monuments, many of which are national cultural monuments as well as chronicles of those who fell during the SNP. The remains of bunkers, partisan huts, or protective fortifications are a credible memento of the turbulent partisan battles and tragic reprisals.
The Banská Bystrica Region is strongly connected with the historical events of the Slovak National Uprising. Learning about them is an opportunity to realize the heroism and determination of those who fought for freedom and democracy in these places. And certainly also a reminder of the horrors of war and the importance of peace.
