In times of glory, there was a battle for me. I changed owners frequently. At the beginning of the 14th century, I became part of the Pohronie guard castles, which served as the main controllers of the roads leading to the rich mining towns.
For a part of the 15th century I was on John Jiskra´s side. I also belonged to Matthias Corvinus who later gave me to the Archbishop of Esztergom, John Vitéz. I could feel it in my walls that it was not a good step. The archbishop planned a conspiracy against Matthias Corvinus, which he managed to suppress. Due to financial problems, Matthias surrendered me to the treasurer, Urban Dóczy. He did not pay his debts, so that was how I fell into the Dóczy family hands.
A very rare relic from 1547 has been found at Revište Castle. A late Gothic portal with a relief coat of arms of the Dóczy family, which was donated to them by King Matthias Corvinus.
A strong animal was depicted on the coat of arms of this wealthy Hungarian family. A walking lion, which holds a golden ball in his mighty paws, is on the red-blue shield. The bottom of the coat of arms is decorated with a golden six-pointed star.
Revište Castle hides a powerful love story in its castle walls. A legend about the beautiful Selima and the lord of the castle. Selima was the daughter of the chief Turkish Captain who lived in Levice Castle. Birds on both continents chirped about her beauty. One day Selima decided to escape with her lover and they hid at Revište Castle.
The Turkish commander got so angry that he challenged the lord of the castle to a duel. However, he knew that he would not have a chance to defeat the mighty man, so he had him poisoned before the fight. On that fateful day, the Turkish Captain came to the duel. A strange figure in knight’s armour stood in front of him. Hasan got scared and pulled out his sword. The knight fell to the ground dead. The Captain came to the knight, took off his helmet and tears of anguish appeared in his eyes. It was his beloved daughter Selima in knight´s clothing. He could not bear what he had done and killed himself out of grief.
A yellow tourist sign from Revištské Podzámčie leads to Revište Castle – from the bus stop (at the Restaurant below the castle) to the car park below the castle. The walk to the car park takes about 20 minutes. From the car park you will get to the castle along an educational trail; the walk takes about 10 minutes.
