One access road to the town of Banská Štiavnica was exclusively under my control. They built me as a guard castle in the 13th century. Due to political disagreements in the struggle for the Hungarian throne there were constant struggles for me. The owners frequently changed. I gradually lost my importance, so I disappeared at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.
But I’m still here in a way. My remains were used by the locals to build a church, and near the place where I once stood, the remains of a 15th-century timber-earth siege fortress are still visible.
It is said that red monks lived at Teplica Castle. Is it why the castle got such a name – Red Castle?
One of the legends says that treasures are hidden in the castle and guarded by a mysterious red monk. He takes on various forms, and thus frightens people who have wandered to the ruins in search of treasure.
Fantasy? Andrej Kmeť, the ethnographer, heard a similar story from an old man who discovered a clay chalice in a field below the castle during ploughing. Another legend tells a story of a girl who appears at the castle and a red monk in the form of a bull guards her carefully. Will the girl meet her rescuer? What if you are the one? So where does the name Red Castle actually come from? Nobody knows.
A yellow marked tourist path from the village of Sklené Teplice merges after about 1.5 km into a green tourist path leading to Teplica Castle.
