12 churches of the Gothic Route with the EUROPEAN HERITAGE LABEL
Travel back to the time of pointed arches and wall frescoes. Discover the breathtaking wealth carefully hidden in the interiors of Gothic churches, which is once again coming to light and closer to people.
In 2022, the European Commission included the ensembles of medieval wall paintings in 12 churches from the Gemer and Malohont region on the list of unique monuments of pan-European significance.
The European Heritage Label (EuropeanHeritageLabel) is awarded, on the basis of strict evaluation, to sites or objects that represent European history, reflect shared European values and their influence on the development of culture and society.
The medieval wall paintings in Gemer and Malohont have thus joined the ancient heart of Athens, the Carnuntum Archaeological Park in Austria, the synagogues in Budapest, and the Javorca Church in Slovenia.
The unique treasures in the churches are well protected, which is why the churches are open to the public only during planned and pre-arranged activities. Selected ones have set opening hours during the summer season.
